Blackberry pomegranate spritzers are a welcomed addition to your summer drinks menu. They come together quickly and are big on bright, fresh flavors.
My biggest pet peeve, in the recipe world, is the gimmick. Fads, trends and gimmicks all have a shelf life. It will only be so long until people are over-saturated with funfetti or cake batter. But tried and true recipes stick around forever. These are the recipes that make it into cookbooks, onto recipe cards, at restaurants. There’s something to be said for trying new things but it is the gimmick, the need to draw someone in with a trick, that is grating. I hate tricks. I’m awful at them, I don’t take them well and frankly, I’m a big baby about being tricked. So I like my food the same way. Minimal tricks, no smoke and mirrors.
For example, think of Gordon Ramsey on Hell’s Kitchen. Sorry but we are in the middle of a raging marathon and I love him. All the screaming and insanity and good looks and British accent, it does me in. Either way, look at the dishes he sends out during dinner service. No, I’m not talking about the raw meats or chewy rice. Each service includes simple appetizers – classic risotto, Ceasar salad. Dinner is beef wellington or lamp chops. Clean, concise and simple foods that are big on flavor and low on gimmicks fly out of his kitchen (most of the time. You know there is always a service that ends early).
This blackberry pomegranate spritzer is just that sort of recipe. It has less than 4 ingredients. Just a little blackberry sauce, a squeeze of lemon and pomegranate-flavored seltzer water. There’s no gimmick here, just sensational flavors. It comes together quickly, making it an ideal addition to your summer drinks repertoire. If you wanted to pare it down even more, make it more simple, use regular plain seltzer. Pomegranate is what I tend to keep on hand for myself. The blackberry flavors can absolutely stand on their own, however, so don’t feel obligated to grab pomegranate. Use what you have available, what you like.
