Brown Sugar BBQ Meatloaf

Some people are real meatloaf purists. I consider myself to be one of them if only in the sense that I like my meatloaf the same every time: peppers and onions chopped and mixed in, ketchup brown sugar glaze on top. Meatloaf, however, is a huge topic of contention at our house. Because we are all meatloaf purists in our own rights. Others might argue (might? They do. All the time) that onions and peppers are death to meatloaf. And thus, it is a struggle/argument every time I put meatloaf on the menu.

Either way, sometimes it is good to try new things. I can adapt a little here and there if the end result seems worth while. And BBQ meatloaf sounds like a worthy cause for change. See, it is similar enough that I had no doubts about the taste. I knew it would be appealing. But it is different enough to be new and interesting. Instead of straight ketchup mixed into the meat, half ketchup-half BBQ sauce is included. This gives the loaf a nice flavor punch. For the glaze, which is by far the most important part of meatloaf, again mix ketchup and BBQ sauce, plus a little brown sugar and some Worcestershire for good measure. The end result is a slightly sweet, flavorful and moist meatloaf even I can get on board with.

Brown Sugar BBQ Meatloaf

  • 1 lb. lean ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ½ cup barbecue sauce
  • 2 egg whites
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder
  • For glaze:
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ½ cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 3 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil and spray with non-stick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, combine beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, barbecue sauce, egg whites, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Using your hands, combine all the ingredients until they fully incorporate.
  3. Take the meat mixture and place it on the baking sheet. Form it into a long, oval log.
  4. To make the glaze, combine all the ingredients in a bowl until fully incorporated. Spread the glaze over the entire meatloaf.
  5. Place in the oven and cook for 40 minutes until cooked through. Let rest for five minutes before slicing into servings.
