Girl On Fire Cupcakes

I love the Hunger Games series for many reasons, but one particular one ranks as the top. It reminded me exactly how much I adore reading. Our lives have gotten busy and hectic the past year. There’s practices and lessons and moving and painting and cleaning. Planning and doing and running around and cooking. Sometimes sleeping, usually dreaming about how my time could be better spent somewhere else. There has been very little time for reading. And until a few weeks ago, I’d never been interested in reading the Hunger Games.

Brian popped on the Catching Fire trailer and I immediately decided that I needed to read this book before seeing the movie. The trailer looked so good, so intense, so vibrant. The book would need to be read immediately. I’d tried reading Hunger Games before and couldn’t ever get past the first chapter. But I stuck to it this time, determined. And by chapter 4, I was a reading machine, stopping only for coffee and the occasional bathroom break. I was hooked, flew through book one and instantly into book two, Catching Fire. I’m not planning on stopping until I’m through book three but in honor of the movie, we do need to celebrate with cupcakes.

These cupcakes are certainly Katniss worthy. They’re spicy and firey. They symbolize District 12, a village of hardness but filled with fire and determination. And frankly, who doesn’t love a rebel?  I really hope you’re out there tonight, seeing the movie. And may the odds be ever in your favor! Or, you know, enjoy the cupcakes.

Girl on Fire Cupcakes – in honor of Katniss, the Hunger Games and for anyone who likes a good kick of spice.
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup canola oil
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ tsp. baking powder
  • ⅛ tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • ½ cup cocoa
  • 1¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • For frosting:
  • 1½ cups heavy cream
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • For drizzle:
  • ¼ cup chocolate sauce
  • 1 tsp. cayenne pepper

  1. Preheat oven to 350 and line a cupcake tin with liners.
  2. In the bowl of a mixer, beat sugar, brown sugar, eggs, oil and milk. Add baking powder, baking soda, vanilla and cayenne pepper and mix until well incorporated. Slowly beat in cocoa and flour.
  3. Spoon batter into muffin tin, ¾ to the top. Bake for 17 to 19 minutes until the cakes are cooked through. Cool completely before icing.
  4. In the bowl of a mixer, whip the cream until soft peaks form. Slowly add brown sugar, cayenne and food coloring (if you choose, gel coloring works best) until the mixture becomes thick enough to pipe.
  5. Place frosting in a piping bag fitted with a star tip. Pipe onto cupcakes.
  6. Mix the glaze ingredients in a dish and transfer to a plastic bottle fitted with a tip. Drizzle on top of the icing.

  1. I need to go see the movie – hopefully we can find a babysitter one day so my husband and I can enjoy a few hours on our own. It’s fun adding heat to baked goods! Your cupcakes look awesome, and I love the bright color in the frosting!
