Sugary Churro Bites

These sugary churro bites are a perfect treat for Cinco De Mayo, or just for any day of the year.

Sugary Churro Bites

Until recently, I’d never actually had a churro. It wasn’t for any particular reason. I’m not anti-churro or anything of that nature. I’ve been to plenty of fairs and amusement parks where these sugary cinnamoned treats are readily available and always passed. Can you blame me? Usually funnel cake is an option. And if you think I’m turning down a funnel cake, you are out of your darned mind. I’ve never met a funnel cake I don’t like and would never turn them down.

That’s probably why I’ve never tried a churro. But with Cinco De Mayo on its way, now was as good a time as any to fix thus issue. And so I did. And made sugary churro bites. Because I’m stupid and somehow managed to misplace my good piping bag thus rendering my dough piping skills limited. I made do and piped out cute little bites instead. And when they are little, they have less calories. Because small things are always less caloric. It’s a known belief.

Here are some tricks when it comes to frying things like this. First, use hot oil. The recipe calls for a certain temperature and you should really get out your thermometer, pop it in the pot and watch the oil heat to it. It pays off. Second, use a deep pot. Don’t use a pan. A pot will keep you from burning the ever living daylights out of your hands. And your arms. And just maybe also your eyes, should you be so messy when making fried foods.

Overall, these churros are relatively easy to make. If you are uncomfortable with hot oil, just take care. Using the deep pot will certainly help ease your feelings. Just a few minutes of mixing ingredients, 30 minutes of chill time and maybe ten minutes of frying. Toss those babies warm in some cinnamon and sugar then try to resist. I might have found myself sleepwalking to the kitchen in the middle of the night to eat more. Might have. I admit nothing.

  1. I’m a bit ashamed to say that I’ve never had a churro either. But like you, I love some funnel cake – topped with soft serve vanilla ice cream, of course. I may need to finally try some churros soon. I love the concept of churro bites!

  2. Everyone knows that bite-sized things hardly have any calories, and if you only eat them standing up and not all at once, they don’t even add up. As far as I’m concerned, the form factor of these churros makes them diet food 😉 I have had quite a few churros in my day, but I’ve never made my own. I’m impressed with yours because they look perfect! Pinned :)

    • See, you totally get me. Standing up and eating mini foods totally cancels out ALL CALORIES! That means we can eat tons of these bites! Let’s do it! :)

  3. I just had my first churro recently too. Let me say…I am now in love with them and can’t believe I waited so long to try them!!! These are perfect little bites to snack on…I’m pretty sure I would finish them all off now that I have churro fever!!!

    • I am so glad I’m not the only one that hasn’t tried a churro until recently. It makes me feel less weird. But really, they are so great, aren’t they? It’s the cinnamon sugar, I swear!

    • I think the bite-sized option is my favorite part! It makes me feel less guilty about eating a million of them, :)

    • I mean, bite-sized really is the best. Because you can definitely hold a cocktail in one hand and a bite-sized snack in the other, right? :)

  4. One of our favorite mexican restaurants had the best churros ever … and then they took them off the menu! It was a sad day lol I guess I just need to make them at home instead! Love that these are bite-sized!

    • No! I hate when that happens! I swear, every time I find an item I love somewhere, they take it off. But I think these might suffice. 😉

  5. Churros are fantastic! I’m glad you finally had the chance to try them. These little churro bites are so fun — especially coated in all that cinnamon and sugar. I don’t blame you one bit for munching on these as a late night snack.
