All my years on Earth tell me one thing: pound cake is serious business. My grandmother and her sister, my Ciocia Mary, used to battle over whose pound cake was better. Frankly, as a non-cake enthusiast, I never cared much about that war. But either way, a classic pound cake has a place in any family recipe book – no matter whose side you fall on.
I was really excited this month when The Cake Slice ladies voted for a pound cake. I knew that, no matter what, I’d be familiar with it and would most likely enjoy it. In case you forgot, the ladies of Cake Slice vote on a different cake each month, all from Carole Walter’s Great Cakes cookbook. I decided to dress mine up a bit with some Nutella buttercream. I’ve been told that pound cake doesn’t need any dressing, it’s good enough on its own. But really, why not toss some Nutella buttercream on there?
As per usual, I’m going to link to Carole’s book for the cake recipe. Be sure to look below for the buttercream instructions, it is to die for on any cake! And take a peek at all of our other bakers to see what they thought this time around!
- 8 Tbsp. unsalted butter, softened
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1 – 2 Tbsp. Nutella
- 2 to 3 Tbsp. heavy cream
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together butter and sugar until well-combined.
- Add in Nutella and mix well until fully incorporated.
- Add in cream, as needed, to thin out the icing if the consistency is too thick.
